Emotionally Focused Therapy

Emotionally Focused Therapy

Helping couples create deeper connection, not just resolve conflict.

Conflict is rarely just about communication or who said what. Beneath many relationship struggles are deeper emotional needs, fears, and patterns that often go unseen.

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) is an evidence-based approach that helps couples understand the emotional cycles driving their conflict so they can build a stronger, more secure connection.

What is Emotionally Focused Therapy?

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) is one of the most researched and effective approaches to couples therapy. Developed by Dr. Sue Johnson, EFT is grounded in attachment science, which recognizes that our closest relationships play a central role in our sense of safety, connection, and emotional well-being.

Rather than focusing only on communication techniques or problem-solving, EFT helps couples understand the emotions and attachment needs beneath recurring arguments. As those deeper patterns become clear, partners can begin responding to one another with greater understanding, compassion, and security.

What can EFT help with?

Emotionally Focused Therapy can help couples who are experiencing:

Frequent arguments or recurring conflict

Emotional distance or disconnection

Difficulty communicating without becoming defensive

Trust issues or healing after betrayal

Feeling unheard or misunderstood

Relationship anxiety or insecurity

Stress related to life transitions

A loss of emotional or physical intimacy

The feeling of having the same conversation over and over without resolution

What happens during EFT?

In our sessions, we'll slow down the interaction
between you and your partner.

Rather than focusing on who is right or wrong, we’ll explore the emotions, fears, and unmet needs beneath the conflict. Together, we’ll identify the cycle that’s keeping you stuck and begin creating new ways of responding to one another.

The goal isn’t to eliminate disagreements. Every couple experiences conflict. The goal is to help both partners feel emotionally safe, understood, and connected, even during difficult conversations.

Is EFT evidence-based?

Yes.

Emotionally Focused Therapy is one of the most extensively researched approaches to couples therapy. Research has consistently shown that EFT helps couples improve relationship satisfaction, strengthen emotional bonds, and maintain those improvements over time.

Because of this strong research foundation, EFT has become one of the leading approaches for helping couples repair connection and create lasting change.

My Training

My work with couples is informed by advanced training in Emotionally Focused Therapy.

I have completed both the Emotionally Focused Therapy Externship and Core Skills Training, allowing me to integrate attachment-based interventions into my work with couples experiencing conflict, disconnection, and relationship distress.

As I continue growing as a clinician, I remain committed to ongoing education so I can provide thoughtful, research-informed care to the couples I work with.

Is EFT right for us?

If you and your partner feel caught in the same painful conversations, emotionally distant, or unsure how to reconnect, Emotionally Focused Therapy may be a good fit.

You don’t need to have everything figured out before reaching out. Whether you’re hoping to strengthen your relationship, navigate a difficult season, or better understand one another, therapy can provide a space to slow down, reconnect, and create meaningful, lasting change together.
